Concussion

Concussion is a type of mild traumatic brain injury caused by a direct or indirect blow to the head that is hard enough to disrupt the brain’s metabolic functioning. This metabolic disruption can cause physical, cognitive, emotional and sleep-related issues. Symptoms are not always obvious; in fact, most are subtle. If you suspect concussion, look for these signs:

  • Headache or pressure in the head
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Light or noise sensitivity
  • Clumsiness, dizziness or increased sleepiness
  • Foggy, hazy or confused feeling
  • Concentration or attention problems
  • Sudden change in attitude
  • Memory loss

Upper Body

Your upper body begins at your neck and extends down through your abdomen, including joints like your shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hands.

  • Shoulder Injuries: The shoulder is the body’s most mobile joint, making it the most susceptible to injury. These injuries usually involve the muscles, ligaments and tendons, not the bones. Common injuries include: shoulder instability, shoulder impingement (excessive rubbing of the muscles against the shoulder blade), rotator cuff problems and shoulder dislocation.
  • Elbow Injuries: The elbow is a combination hinge and pivot joint, allowing you to bend/straighten and twist/rotate your arm. These injuries are often the result of overuse and repetitive motion. Common injuries include: flexor tendinitis, ulnar collateral ligament injury, valgus extension overload (Pitcher’s Elbow), stress fracture and ulnar neuritis (irritation or inflammation of ulnar nerve).
  • Wrist Injuries: The wrist is a gliding joint made up of eight carpal bones. These types of injuries typically occur with overuse or bracing during a fall. Common injuries include: tendinitis, sprains and strains, wrist fracture and dislocation, and carpal tunnel.
  • Hand Injuries: The hand is made of up several different joints, including: hinge, gliding, condyloid and saddle joints, allowing for a wide range of motion. Common injuries include: bruising, fractures, flexor tendon issues, dislocations, and sprains and strains.

Lower Body

Your lower body begins at your waist and extends down to your feet and toes, including joints like your hips, knees, ankles and feet.

  • Hip Injuries: The hip is a ball-and-socket joint and is one of the most important joints in the body, allowing multidirectional movement and rotation. These injuries can occur as a result of inflammation, overuse, falls and even, arthritis. Common injuries include: hip fractures, muscles strain, tendinitis, IT band issues, bursitis, hip pointer (pelvic injury resulting in internal bleeding), labral tear or osteoarthritis.
  • Knee Injuries: The knee is a complex joint made up of cartilage, bones, tendons and ligaments. In fact, it is the largest joint in your body, and very vulnerable to injury. These injuries are typically caused by high energy impact, contact, trauma, or abnormal movements. Common injuries include: patellar fractures, patellar dislocation, unstable kneecap (when kneecap slips out of place), ligament injuries (anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), medial collateral ligament (MCL), lateral collateral ligament (LCL) and meniscal tears) and tendon tears.
  • Ankle Injuries: The ankle is a hinge joint where the bones in your leg and foot meet. These injuries are determined by the kind of tissue damaged – bone, ligament or tendon. Common injuries include: sprains (high ankle sprain), fractures, dislocation, tendinitis and arthritis.
  • Foot Injuries: The foot is a complex region of the body with a flexible structure of bones, joints, muscles and soft tissue. Common injuries include: plantar fasciitis, fractures and stress fractures, dislocation, Achilles tendon issues, turf toe, toe joint issues and arthritis.
