Maternal Infant Unit Frequently Asked Questions

How many people are allowed in the family care room?
Visiting hours are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on the Maternal Infant Unit. The patient’s main support person can spend the night, but no children are allowed to stay overnight with the patient. Remember to allow enough private time to establish breastfeeding for your baby and to rest before you go home.

Do I need to call my pediatrician?
Your pediatrician will be notified by the nursery staff and will examine your baby within 24 hours.

Will Lactation Services come to my room?
All of our nurses are trained to show you how to breastfeed and help you get off to a good start. If you are having a problem and your nurse is unable to solve it, Lactation Services will be contacted for a consultation.

How do I know if my insurance covers the pediatricians listed on the Pediatrician Preference Sheet?
While going through the pediatrician selection process, you will need to check with your insurance company to make sure the pediatrician you select is covered. This should be done before coming to the hospital for delivery.

What about a car seat?
You will be required to bring your baby’s car seat in to the hospital before you are discharged. Car seats should be appropriate for your baby’s weight and should not be older than six years. The manufacturer’s date of the car seat can be found on a sticker on the seat itself. Please click here to review Georgia’s car seat law.

Our Perinatal Education department also offers a Car Seat Safety class quarterly. Click here for more information or to register for this class.

Can I order meal trays for my guests?
To make your stay with us as comfortable as possible, we offer the following meal options for guests.

  • Guest Trays—$6 for breakfast tray and $9 for lunch or dinner trays. Menu choices are the same as the patient meal choices. Payment (cash or credit card) is required in advance and should be given to the hostess.
  • New Arrivals Café—Located opposite the newborn nursery on the second floor, the café is open from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Café is closed on weekends and holidays.
