Dysphagia or swallowing problems

Gwinnett SportsRehab speech pathologists have extensive training in swallowing problems, also known as dysphagia. We collaborate with your referring physician to provide the most individualized therapeutic and medical management possible for your swallowing disorder.

Many conditions can contribute to swallowing problems including:

  • Stroke
  • Cancer
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease or laryngopharyngeal reflux
  • Anterior cervical disc fusion

Swallowing evaluation and treatment may include:

  • Modified barium swallow study (MBSS)
  • Fiber optic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES)
  • Clinical swallow evaluation
  • Individualized dysphagia therapy program
  • Diet modifications and recommendations
  • Strategies and techniques for good nutrition while maximizing swallowing safety

Swallowing treatment for patients with oral, head and neck cancer

People diagnosed with oral, head and neck cancer may receive radiation, chemotherapy or undergo surgery as treatment of cancer. If you have been diagnosed, you might benefit from speech pathology services both before and after your treatment to maximize swallowing safety and function.

Head and neck cancer services include:

  • Counseling and training sessions for patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiation or surgery
  • Services for laryngectomy patients, including electrolarynx training, esophageal speech training and tracheoesophageal puncture management

Important: Swallowing evaluation and treatment requires a referral from a physician. Services are available at both our Duluth and Lawrenceville campuses.
