Medical Student Rotations

Gwinnett Medical Center offers several opportunities for 4th year medical students interested in rotating in Internal Medicine (Note: Third year core rotations are offered for our affiliate medical schools and are scheduled directly through the medical school).  They may rotate in one of the following:

Internal Medicine Sub-Internship

The IM sub-internship gives students the opportunity to experience management of complicated medical patients in the acute hospital setting.  Students get to learn from the diverse pathology that GMC has to offer.  They will have the opportunity to work with GMC Internal Medicine and Faculty, and will attend didactic sessions such as academic half day, grand rounds and morning report.

Depending on the number of students rotating during the block, students may also spend some time on the night float service with Internal Medicine residents. This will give them the unique opportunity to experience cross-coverage of patients on various services (inpatient medicine, cardiology, ICU) as well as work with the overnight admitting intern in the Emergency Department.

Applications for the sub-internship can be made through VSAS

Due to a high volume of application for our limited positions, we have the following requirements:

  • COMLEX 1 score above 500
  • USMLE Step 1 score above 220
  • Plan to apply to Internal Medicine at Gwinnett Medical Center

Subspecialty rotations

Students may also elect to work with private specialist offices that offer consultative services at GMC.  Students may contact these sub-specialty offices independently to set up a rotation.  While at GMC, students may participate in Internal Medicine didactic sessions with approval of his/her supervising physician.
