Maria Borrero, MD

Medical School: University of Utah

Originally from Barranquilla, Colombia, Maria moved to the U.S. when she was 12 years old. Since then, she has lived in New Jersey, Miami, Chicago and Salt Lake City, but her family lives in Gwinnett.

She graduated from Ramapo College of New Jersey in 2009 with a double major in Biology and Psychology. After college, she performed clinical research for four years at Northwestern University and the University of Miami, focusing on cancer control and prevention in the Latino population. During that time, she was also a community healthcare worker with the Livestrong Foundation.

She attend the University of Utah for medical school, where she was involved with the Latino Medical Student Association, Oncology Interest Group, volunteered at several underserved clinics and performed HPV prevention research. Following graduation, she spent a year performing research with the Cancer Health Equity team at Huntsman Cancer Institute where she oversaw a planning grant for the development of a pipeline program for American Indian/Alaska Native high school and undergraduate students interested in STEM. During that year, she also coordinated the all Spanish language cancer conference for the Hispanic/Latino community of Utah—the first of its kind.

In the future, she'd like to combine her passion for mentorship, working with underserved populations, and research in the context of Internal Medicine and Oncology.

Outside of medicine, she enjoys spending time with family, running, cooking, traveling, yoga, pilates and playing volleyball. She meditate nearly every day and loves attending meditation retreats!
