Patient Care

The teaching philosophy of the Strickland Family Medicine Center is first to increase patient safety by having residents perform the procedure multiple times before ever performing it on a patient. The second part of the teaching philosophy is to improve patient experience by reducing unnecessary referrals to specialists for procedures family physicians have training and equipment to perform. These goals are accomplished by a combination of low and high fidelity simulation modalities that range from sewing models to ultrasound compliant models to teach central lines, to full functioning simulators that can deliver simulated babies, have heart attacks, cry, breath, bleed and sweat.

Every patient seen by a resident is also under the care of an attending physician. Every visit is discussed with the attending physician and examined as needed depending on severity of case and years of training. An attending physician will accompany the resident for every patient seen for the first six months. As training progresses there will be a progressive decrease in supervision as residents demonstrate competency.
