Lap Band Surgery

Lap band surgery, or gastric banding, is a type of weight loss surgery that uses an implanted device to restrict the amount of food you are able to eat.

How Lap Band Works

During a Lap Band surgery, the bariatric surgeons at the Center for Weight Management place a ring around the upper part of the stomach. This ring helps form a small pouch that can only hold about a half a cup of food, making you consume less because you feel fuller faster.

The ring is adjustable and creates a small opening that slows the passage of food from the small upper pouch to the rest of the stomach and intestines, making you also feel fuller longer.

There are two types of gastric bands available—the LAP-BAND® System and the Realize® Band. Ask your doctor about which gastric band is best for you.

Benefits of Lap Band Surgery

  • Minimally invasive weight loss surgery
  • Lowest rate of complications
  • Lowest mortality rate
  • Adjustable and reversible
  • Return to work within one week

Lab Band Risks

  • Slower initial weight loss- usually 1-2 pound per week
  • Regular follow-ups are critical to success—monthly for the first year
  • Requires an implanted medical device

Am I a Candidate for Lap Band Surgery?

Lap Band is available for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of at least 40. This minimally invasive procedure is used to treat severe obesity and is recommended for those who have tried to lose weight in other ways without success.

Lap Band may also be an option for certain individuals with a BMI of 35-40 who suffer from other medical conditions, like heart disease, sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.
