Teen Bariatric Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

How Does My Teen Get Started with Bariatric Surgery?

Getting started is easy. Please contact your pediatrician or other primary care physician to complete and return this form. Once received, we will check your insurance benefits and eligibility requirements then contact you to review this information. At that time, if all criteria is met, we will schedule your appointment with the surgeon.

What Does the Teen Bariatric Program Include?

Teens will attend six monthly sessions with each member of the multidisciplinary team and attend age appropriate discussion groups. These monthly meetings will help teens and their families prepare for the lifestyle changes necessary for weight loss and long-term maintenance. The first appointment with the surgeon is the shortest and can be scheduled after school. Monthly appointments occur on the second Wednesday of every month and will last approximately two hours.

What is the Cost of the Program?

Insurance coverage varies with each individual. We will be happy to check your insurance benefits and contact you with this information. Not all fees are covered by insurance. You may be responsible for deductibles and out of pocket fees per your insurance plan requirements. Additionally, fees for the fitness program are not covered by insurance. On your first appointment, our patient advocate will meet with you to provide a breakdown of costs and insurance coverage.

What Type of Bariatric Surgery is Best for My Teen?

Our experienced surgeons perform laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, laparoscopic gastric bypass and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. During the consultation, the surgeon will discuss these options in more detail so you and your teen can make an informed decision on which would be the preferred surgical option.
