Robotic Surgery for Women
A New Approach to Gynecological Surgery
When medication and non-invasive procedures are unable to relieve symptoms from gynecologic conditions, surgery remains the accepted and most effective treatment. These conditions include, but are not limited to:
Traditional open surgery, using a large incision for access to the uterus and surrounding anatomy, used to be the standard approach for many gynecologic procedures. But this type of surgery can cause significant pain, trauma and a long recovery process, as well as is a threat to surrounding organs and nerves.
Fortunately, Gwinnett Medical Center–Duluth uses less invasive options. In fact, some of the surgical techniques we employ enable surgeons to access the targeted anatomy using a vaginal approach, which may not require any external incision. But for a complex hysterectomy and other gynecologic procedures, robotic surgery with the da Vinci® Surgical System may be the most effective, least invasive treatment option.
Through tiny, one to two centimeter incisions, surgeons using the da Vinci system can operate with greater precision and control. This form of minimally invasive surgery greatly diminishes the pain and risk associated with large incisions while increasing the likelihood of a fast recovery and excellent clinical outcomes.
