Vestibular Rehabilitation and Balance Retraining
Dizziness and imbalance are problems that affect a significant number of people. Symptoms may be so severe that an individual can no longer drive or safely walk in a crowd of people.
Vestibular Rehabilitation is an exercise/movement approach aimed at decreasing dizziness, vertigo and imbalance as a result of vestibular disorders. The goals of this therapeutic approach are to:
- Decrease or eliminate dizziness/vertigo
- Improve balance, function and safety
- Improve visual motor control and tolerance of motion
- Increase activity level
- Reduce fall or risk of falls
A licensed physical therapist performs a comprehensive assessment after the patient has been evaluated by a physician. An individual treatment plan is developed based on findings from the evaluation. On averag, therapy will be one to two times per week for four to six weeks on an outpatient basis. This service requires a physician referral.
