Joint Classes

Patients who are planning total joint replacement surgery and their families are invited to attend a free Joint Class prior to surgery at Gwinnett Medical Center.

We strongly encourage you and your family to attend Joint Class.  Research has shown that patients who attend this type of class feel more confident and comfortable about their surgery and generally have better outcomes.  Joint Class is held in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere in a classroom at the hospital.

A team of experts from different specialties will explain each step in the total joint replacement process. You will learn how the surgery is performed and what to expect before, during and after the surgery. Topics include:

  • Pain control
  • Equipment used during your hospital stay and at home
  • Physical limitations and precautions after surgery
  • Helpful exercises during rehabilitation
  • Planning a safe return home
  • Family support classes

You and your family are encouraged to ask questions and express any concerns about the surgery. Educational materials are available for your review and reference. We look forward to meeting you and caring for you throughout your joint replacement experience!

If you’re not scheduled to come to Joint Class or need more information, call Julie York at 678-312-6556 or e-mail her at jyork@ghsnet.org.

Rehab Gym

The Center for Orthopedics has a rehabilitation gym conveniently located on the unit.  Working in the Gym offers opportunities for social interaction and friendly competition among patients who are recovering from surgery.
