Why can't I eat or drink after midnight before my procedure?
Your stomach must be empty to prevent vomiting. If you vomit during procedure, it could go into your lungs. Nothing by mouth means no mints, candy, or gum. Nothing to eat or drink. If you eat or drink, your procedure may be postponed or cancelled.
Should I take my medications before my procedure?
It depends on which procedure you are having. If you are uncertain about which medications to take, consult your physician a couple of days before your procedure.
For all procedures, do not take diuretics (water pills) or diabetes pills. If you are on insulin injections, consult your endocrinologist (diabetes doctor) for instructions.
If you are having a cardiac catheterization, pacemaker, ICD, or peripheral arteriogram, take all of your blood pressure medications the morning of your procedure.
If you are having a carotid angioplasty, do not take your blood pressure medications that morning.
Why can't I drive myself home?
You will receive medications that will make you sleepy and unsafe for driving.
Can I wear my eyeglasses, contact lenses, and/or hearing aid?
Yes you may.
What can I do to make the day of my procedure go smoothly?
Arrive at your scheduled appointment time.
Follow the above medication directions.
Bring all of your medication bottles (prescription and herbal supplements) or a detailed list of your medications.
Bring the names and phone numbers of your doctors and pharmacy.
Plan to have someone drive you home.
Can I wear jewelry?
You may wear your rings, but no necklaces.
