Shadowing/Observation Experiences

Shadowing/Observation experiences are offered at Gwinnett Medical Center
(GMC). The approval of shadowing/observation experience is dependent on
all of the shadowing/observation process steps being successfully
met as explained on this website. Please note:

• All shadowers/observers must be at least 18 years of age to shadow.
• The shadowing/observation period is limited to one to two days.

Follow the shadowing/observation process as outlined below in Section 1:

Section 1: Shadower/Observer: the shadower/observer
takes responsibility to follow the steps below through to completion
for the privilege of shadowing. (Learning Resources will inform
the shadower/observer if the shadowing/observation has been approved
or denied.)

Identify an associate, physician, or midlevel provider who agrees to allow you to
shadow them in the hospital setting.

Complete the Shadowing Process Form and also the materials below:

• Read and study the Information Security Training computer-based learning module (PDF)
• Print and answer the Information Security Acknowledgement (PDF)
• Sign the Shadowing Workforce Confidentiality Agreement (PDF)
• Complete and Sign the Communicable Disease Form (PDF)
• Complete/Sign the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Form (PDF) 
• Complete/Sign the Shadowing/Observer Behavioral Agreement
• Also complete the following for all shadowing experiences that will be in an Operating (OR) or
  Procedural area:
  • Student Protocol for the Operating Room
  • OR Protocol Acknowledgement Statement

The completed tests and signed forms listed above are to be e-mailed to learningresources@gwinnettmedicalcenter.org.

Simultaneously the shadower/observer needs to assure the associate, physician, or midlevel named on the Process Form emails the following to learningresources@gwinnettmedicalcenter.org:

• Your name;
• Documents their department manager has approved the shadowing;
• Notes the date/s (1-2 days), time (start-finish), and number of hours the shadowing is to occur.

If the applicant does not complete the process requirements within 30 days of original request,  the request will be denied and the applicant will need to re-apply and repeat the process.

Section 2: Learning Resources (LR): Upon receipt of all required documents listed above, Learning Resources will communicate approval/denial of the shadowing/observation request within 5-7 business days. When a shadowing/observation request is:

Approved by Learning Resources you will need to:

• Dress  in business casual attire with supportive shoes for the shadowing experience; or wear attire for the shadowing experience as designated by the Procedural area.
• Wear an “Observer” Badge during shadowing:
  • Observer Badges are to be picked up and signed out, during normal weekday business hours, prior to the shadowing experiences in Learning Resources, 1000 Medical Center Blvd., Building 100, Suite 115 on the Lawrenceville Campus.   • Once shadowing date/s have been completed the Observer must:
    • Email dates and the number of hours shadowed to learningresources@gwinnettmedicalcenter.org.
    • Return the Observer Badge to Learning Resources upon completion of shadowing.

Denied by Learning Resources, the process terminates and the shadowing/observation will not occur.
