Lawrenceville, Ga. (February 19, 2014) – Gwinnett Medical Center (GMC) recently announced cardiac and thoracic surgeon Richard L. Harvey, MD, has joined the hospital system and, along with David Langford, MD, will serve as one of the lead surgeons at the Strickland Heart Center.
Specializing in cardiac, vascular and thoracic surgery at Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgeons—Gwinnett Medical Group, Dr. Harvey has a particular interest in heart valve procedures and minimally invasive procedures. Dr. Harvey is a Diplomate of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, as well as a member of the American College of Surgeons, Society of Thoracic Surgeons and Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society. He is a sought-after author and presenter.

Dr. Harvey obtained his Bachelor’s degree from Mississippi College. The Jackson, Miss., native then felt led to Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where an illness and life-saving surgery triggered a decision to pursue a career in medicine. He returned to the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 1992.
Dr. Harvey completed his internship and general surgery residency in Macon at the Mercer University School of Medicine, where he earned the Chief’s Intern of the Year award and was named chief administrative resident. He then completed his residency in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Mississippi. Dr. Harvey would go on to teach at Mercer University while working at the Macon CardioVascular Institute. He served in many areas of leadership at the Medical Center of Central Georgia during his time there.
