Gwinnett Medical Center Completes Several Open Heart Surgeries
Gwinnett Medical Center (GMC) is pleased to announce the successful completion of four cardiac surgeries, which occurred over a period of less than 48 hours. The surgeries were completed in GMC’s Strickland Heart Center by the cardiac and thoracic surgeons Alexander G. Justicz, MD, and David A. Langford, MD. With over 35 years of experienced combined, they are the lead surgeons at the new heart center.
“Today, we celebrate these surgical successes with our cardiac patients and our community,” said President and CEO Philip Wolfe, Gwinnett Medical Center. “This exciting achievement marks the pinnacle in an eventful journey related to GMC’s Strickland Heart Center.”
Dr. Justicz, an employee of the newly-formed Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgeons – Gwinnett Medical Group, is board certified in thoracic surgery.
Dr. Langford is board certified in thoracic surgery. An affiliate with the hospital system for nearly two years, Dr. Langford served GMC in an administrative capacity as the medical director for cardiovascular surgery. He was highly involved in the development of GMC’s open heart surgery program.
“While the building and equipment are new to GMC, Dr. Justicz and I have worked together for many years, which has made for a very comfortable start for this program,” said Dr. Langford, an employee of St. Joseph’s Medical Group. “We felt that the program would be a welcome addition considering the talented and experienced cardiologists affiliated with GMC.”
“The number of cardiac surgery cases we’ve seen of the last 36 hours is another indication of the untapped need in this community,” said Dr. Justicz.
Three of the four recent cases involved coronary bypass surgery. The fourth case was unexpected. As the patient was arriving at GMC, she went into cardiac arrest.
“We quickly stabilized the patient, who is now due for follow-up cardiac procedures,” said Dr. Justicz. “However, if the open heart surgery program were not here, the results could have been less favorable.”
Located in Lawrenceville, GMC’s new Strickland Heart Center is a 40,000 square-foot facility that houses advanced technology, including state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization labs and operating rooms, providing residents of metro Atlanta access to leading cardiac care professionals.
