What is bariatric surgery?
Bariatrics is a group of surgical procedures performed on people who are obese, to achieve weight loss and improve health and the overall quality of life of a patient. The surgeries typically reduce the capacity of the stomach with an implanted medical device (gastric banding), through division of the stomach and creation of a small pouch (gastric bypass surgery) or removal of most of the stomach, leaving a small narrow stomach (sleeve gastrectomy).
A bariatric surgical patient can be potentially cured of numerous medical diseases caused by obesity, including Type II diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, urinary stress incontinence, infertility and fatty liver disease. Bariatric surgery is a proven method; it offers patients the tools that, with their commitment to making the necessary changes, will result in lasting weight loss and improved health.
